Thurso Hogmanay 2008/09
A very traditional Hogmanay from Thurso, Scotland. Music was provided by local band, Whisky and the lone piper was Alan Ploughman. Around 2500 revelers enjoyed an excellent street party to bring in 2009 at Sir John's Square in front of St Peter's Church. The church clock was 2 minutes fast, not bad for such an old timer! The weather was mild after several days of hard frost and there was a little bit of light drizzle but overall it stayed dry. The square and town centre streets looking fabulous with christmas lights provided by Thurso Town Improvements Association which works hard to make sure the town has the best christmas decor north of Inverness. The event passed without any trouble or incident, a credit to the people of Thurso.

Angels & Demons - Official Trailer
Release Date: 2008 Genre: Action/Adventure Starring: Tom Hanks, Ewan McGregor, Ayelet Zurer, Stellan Skarsgaard Director: Ron Howard Plot: The team behind the global phenomenon The Da Vinci Code returns for the highly anticipated Angels & Demons, based upon the bestselling novel by Dan Brown. Tom Hanks reprises his role as Harvard religious expert Robert Langdon, who once again finds that forces with ancient roots are willing to stop at nothing, even murder, to advance their goals. Ron Howard again directs the film, which is produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and John Calley. The screenplay is by David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman. When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati - the most powerful underground organization in history - he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization's most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he jets to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. Embarking on a nonstop, action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra will follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican's only hope for survival.

Black Rain (1989) #1
Black Rain (1989) Director: Shohei Imamura Based on the serialized novel by Masuji Ibuse, Black Rain is a somber, visually distilled, and deeply affecting portrait of the human toll and uncalculated tragedy of nuclear holocaust. In contrast to Shohei Imamura's characteristically unrefined, primitivistic, and subversively bawdy cinema, the film is shot in high contrast black and white, creating a spare and tonally muted chronicle of dignity, survival, community, and human resilience. Through recurring literal and figurative images of regression, Imamura conveys a dual meaning, not only in the community's noble attempt to rebuild Hiroshima and return to a semblance of normal life after the annihilating bombing but also in their collective gradual and systematic erasure from Japanese society through long-term effects of radiation sickness, infertility, cultural (and geographic) isolation, and social stigmatization: Yasuko's inability to wash the stains from the black rain that tainted her clothing; her evening chore of resetting the clock; her multiple, unrealized marriage proposals; her grandmother's senility. The theme of futile cyclicality and repetition is further illustrated in the threatened use of nuclear weapons during the Korean War, an irresponsible comment that causes a dispirited and embittered Shigeko to remark, "Unjust peace is better than a war of justice". In a memorably sublime and surreal episode, Yasuko and Shigeko observe an oversized carp swimming upstream in the village pond. It is a haunting and transcendent reflection of the community's own metaphoric struggle as well - a poetic image of tenacity and determination against an inalterable current of recklessness, ignorance, and myopic vision.

Universal Studios Japan Osaka -CityWalk - ????????????????
"Your category: famous cities." What Japanese industrial city is not only a busy port and has one of the largest populations (close to 2.5 million), but is famous for bunraku (puppet) dramas and Japan's only around-the-clock airport? Hey, no fair looking at the graphic to the rightbut the answer is Osaka. Japan's newest Hard Rock Cafe is located at Universal CityWalk Osaka, part of the massive Universal Studios Japan complex that opened in the spring of 2001. Universal Studios Japan, the first Universal Studios outside the U.S., is situated at the Konohana park site on the waterfront of Osaka's western section, only 10 minutes by rail from JR Osaka station. The brand new 140-acre Universal Studios Japan complex includes 18 rides and shows, plus great shopping and dining, especially at the Hard Rock Cafe Osaka. The main entrance to the Cafe is on the second level of CityWalk and has 324 seats upstairs, while the retail shop is on the ground level below. The Cafe has a domed ceiling in the main dining room so you can dine in style.
